Farm transition workshops come to four S.D. towns
BROOKINGS, S.D. - Workshops for families to plan estates and farm transitions will be held in four South Dakota locations.
The workshops start with a two-day session and then follow-up meetings are held four to six weeks after the initial workshop. They are planned for the following dates at the following South Dakota locations:
€ Nov. 14-15, Mobridge, follow-up workshop Dec. 5-6;
€ Dec. 18-19, Sioux Falls, follow-up workshop Jan. 22-23;
€ Jan. 8-9, Watertown, follow-up workshop Feb. 19-20;
€ Feb. 12-13, Winner, follow-up workshop March 5-6.
The sessions are held from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. the first day and then 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. the second day. The cost is $150 for two attendees and $50 for additional members of a family.

The South Dakota Cooperative Extension Service and the South Dakota Soybean Research & Promotion Council are sponsoring and hosting the events.
South Dakota Cooperative Extension marketing/farm business management educator Heather Gessner said the workshops help families face the future.
“These programs encourage families to set goals for their operations and then provide the tools needed to reach those goals,” she said. “We recognize that there are a lot of concerns about what will happen to the farm when parents retire or pass away, both by Mom and Dad and the kids."
South Dakota Soybean Research & Promotion Council vice president Doug Hanson, who is a past attendee of the workshops, said they work.
“The program could save you thousands of dollars with your family's estate,” Hanson said. “The follow-up communication has been excellent, and it helps to have time between the initial and second meetings, so families can talk together before they go forward.”
