Webinar offers producers insights on heifer feeding

Thursday, October 23, 2008 9:21 AM CDT

BROOKINGS, S.D. - A heifer-feed “Webinar” is available for producers who seek information on feeding distillers grains to replacement heifers.

South Dakota State University Cooperative Extension dairy specialist Alvaro Garcia leads the Web-based seminar. It covers heifer-feeding program objectives, nutritional benchmarks, climate and heifer performance, and the use of alternative feeds and crop residues in heifer rations.

A Windows Media Player is necessary to watch the seminar. Producers can view it at the SDSU Dairy Science Web site, http://dairysci.sdstate.edu.

Click on the “Extension” choice at the top of the page, then on the “Learn about feeding distillers grains to replacement heifers” link.

Garcia said the Webinar is a good chance for producers who are still evaluating their replacement heifer ration to get more information on the topic.

“We hope producers will take advantage of this resource,” Garcia said. “The information is free and easy to use, just visit the Web site and watch it over a lunch break or after chores.”

Producers with additional questions on replacement heifer ration choices can call Garcia at (605) 688-5488, or e-mail him at Alvaro.Garcia@sdstate.edu.
