Crop Watcher: Beans are setting pods at Montrose

MONTROSE, S.D. - Beans are setting pods and the corn is all pollinated in the Montrose, S.D., area. Southeast South Dakota crop watcher Jason McAreavey says that the crops are looking good, even though they could use some moisture.
“We have been pretty dry over the last two weeks,” he said. “Things look terrific - we are one good rain away from a fantastic crop.”
He adds that the temperatures have been in the 80s. He says that yield levels will be determined by the arrival of the first frost.
“It just depends on if the frost stays away. We started late planting so the crops were behind, but they seemed to have caught up rather nicely. I think there will be some very good corn, but overall yield will be affected by all the low ground that didn't get planted or got drowned out,” he said.
He adds that area producers are optimistic and looking forward to average corn yields this harvest. When it comes to soybeans, he says that another good rain could add as much as 10 bushels an acre.
Soybean aphids have been a real problem for many producers in his area.
“Some producers have had to spray beans a few times. It has been the worst year for them that I can remember,” he said. “The threat should be over.”
McAreavey has been busy putting up his third cutting of hay and cleaning out feedlots in preparation for weaning.
