S.D. Summer Spotlight is July 25-27 in Huron
HURON, S.D. - The 2008 South Dakota Summer Spotlight and State 4-H Livestock Judging Contest is scheduled for July 25-27 at the State Fairgrounds in Huron, S.D.
The annual event showcases South Dakota's youth exhibiting livestock. The major sponsor for the event is the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council. Several other South Dakota businesses sponsor this event as well.
All buildings open for stalling livestock at noon July 24. Some beef breeds begin checking in at 5 p.m. July 24, and other breeds July 25.
The South Dakota State 4-H Livestock Judging Contest takes place July 25.
The All Beef Breeds Summer Spotlight is July 25 and 26.
The Hereford, Charolais, Gelbvieh and Red Angus shows begin at 3 p.m. July 25. The Angus, Shorthorn, crossbred market heifer, crossbred market steer, commercial heifer, Simmental futurity, Simmental, Chianina, Limousin and Maine-Anjou cattle shows begin at 8 a.m. July 26. New this year will be selection of “Top 5” overall market and breeding beef animals.
The South Dakota Born and Bred Sheep Show, open to lambs purchased from a South Dakota producer, starts at 5 p.m. July 25.
The Summer Spotlight Market Lamb Show gets under way at 8 a.m. July 26, with shows featuring Southdown, Dorset, Speckle Face, wool breeds, Hampshire, Suffolk, natural color and crossbred lambs.
The Summer Spotlight Breeding Sheep Show starts at 11 a.m. July 26 and features Southdown, Hampshire, Rambouillet, Targhee, Dorset and Suffolk breeds.
The Summer Spotlight Pig Show takes place July 27, starting at 7:30 a.m. Hogs will be shown in four divisions: prospect gilts, market gilts, prospect barrows and market barrows. Hogs will be shown by breed, Yorkshire, Hampshire, Duroc, other purebreds and crossbred.
The Summer Spotlight gives 4-H and FFA youth an opportunity to exhibit their livestock before upcoming achievement days in counties throughout South Dakota.
Youth compete for awards and prizes sponsored by the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council and other sponsors. The South Dakota Summer Spotlight is free and open to the public.
