Get fed cattle basis information from SDSU

Thursday, July 17, 2008 3:36 PM CDT

BROOKINGS, S.D. - A new South Dakota State University publication explains fed cattle basis levels in South Dakota.

SDSU Extension Extra 5074, “Fed Cattle Basis in South Dakota,” is available at this link: http://agbiopubs.sdstate.edu/articles/ExEx5074.pdf. Or ask for it at any county Extension office.

The publication offers information on futures, cash and a brief history on live cattle basis. Matthew Diersen, SDSU Extension risk and business management specialist, wrote the publication.

Diersen evaluated cash and futures prices on cattle and established a definition of basis, then looked at the average basis from 2002 to 2007. His discussion of fed cattle basis may help producers as they make risk management decisions.

The publication addresses historic and expected basis and provides information on basis levels in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Diersen takes higher trucking costs and other underlying factors into consideration as he presents the information.
