Presidential disaster declaration approved
PIERRE, S.D. - South Dakota Gov. Mike Rounds announced that 27 South Dakota counties and three reservations are receiving federal financial assistance to help recover from the early June storm that caused widespread flooding across the state.
The counties that will receive the assistance are Aurora, Bon Homme, Brule, Buffalo, Butte, Charles Mix, Clay, Dewey, Douglas, Gregory, Haakon, Hand, Hanson, Hughes, Hutchinson, Jackson, Lawrence, Lyman, McCook, Meade, Mellette, Moody, Perkins, Stanley, Tripp, Turner and Ziebach. The reservations are Crow Creek, Cheyenne River and Lower Brule.
The assistance is made available through a presidential disaster declaration signed today by President Bush. A disaster declaration authorizes the federal government to provide federal relief and recovery assistance for up to 75 percent of the eligible damage to public infrastructure in the affected areas. The state will cover 15 percent of the remaining eligible costs, and eligible applicants are responsible for 10 percent of the costs.
A decision on South Dakota's request for individual assistance is pending.
