Wednesday, February 13, 2008 4:12 PM CST

BROOKINGS, S.D. - Livestock experts will present two training sessions addressing cow nutrition at calving and herd health Feb. 22 and March 14.

The Feb. 22 event will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. at the 4-H building, 604 Second St. N.E., Wessington Springs, S.D. The session is free of charge.

The March 14 event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Davison County Fairgrounds, 3200 W. Havens St., Mitchell, S.D. The event costs $8 and includes a noon meal. Registration for this event is encouraged before March 11.

To register for either session, call the Jerauld County Extension office, (605) 539-9471.

Jerauld County Extension livestock educator Heidi Doering-Resch will make presentations at both events.

She will discuss cow nutrient requirements at calving time, proper body condition scores, and how those scores affect calf health and postpartum interval.

She will also discuss cow condition levels and the most economical ways to put condition on cows with inadequate levels, including information on how to economically price feedstuffs.

At the Feb. 22 event, veterinarian Delvin Feistner will discuss current herd health protocols and health issues affecting area producers.

At the March 14 event, South Dakota State University Extension veterinarian Russ Daly will discuss current herd health protocols and calf health tips.
