South Dakota State Fair is ‘Still the One'

The South Dakota State Fair is “the one to go to” and the Grandstand line up is just that, grand.

Remaining one of the largest reunions in the state, the South Dakota State Fair stands behind its theme and shows people why it is, “Still the One!”

This year's state fair offers an all-star line-up of world-class bull riders, country music icons, rock music and the always-exciting stock car races.

Starting with the Preview Night, Aug. 29, the Red Wilk Construction CBR Bull Bash will take over the rodeo arena and bull riders from across the country will flock to compete. The bash will continue Aug. 30.

Sporting three platinum albums, a Grand Ole Opry member, Country Music Academy and Association of Country Music female vocalist of the year nominee, Terri Clark will take the stage Aug. 31. A few of the hits Clark will be performing include “Girls Lie Too,” “I Just Wanna Be Mad,” “Poor Poor Pitiful Me,” and the new single “Dirty Girl.” The opening act for Terri Clark will be the Doo-Wah Riders.

On Sept. 1, Neal McCoy and Clay Walker will team up to provide an evening of entertainment. Two-time Entertainer of the Year, McCoy will sing his hits “Billy's Got His Beer Goggles On,” “They're Playing Our Song,” “The Shake,” and “The City Put The Country Back in Me.”

Walker will be performing songs that helped him attain the title of consistent hit-maker. They include “I Can't Sleep,” “Live Until I Die,” “If I could Make a Living,” and “Then What.” A real treat for fairgoers will be Dustin Evans and the Good Times Band who will open for McCoy and Walker.

Evans is the son of South Dakota troubadour, Kyle Evans, who died several years ago in a motorcycle accident. Kyle was a regular performer at the fair and well known across the state and nation. Evans, influenced by his father, taught himself to play guitar, drums, bass, piano and write songs. The Good Times Band is comprised of talented musicians with a wide range of influence and experience.

Rock powerhouse, Ted Nugent will return to the fair Sept. 2. Nugent is considered the No. 1 guitar showman in the world. He has sold over 30 million albums. Some of the hits he will be performing include “Cat Scratch Fever,” “Wango Tango,” and “Motor City Madhouse” along with others. Along with music, Nugent is well known in other areas, being one of the most well respected outdoorsmen in the country.

Auto racing has long been one of the favorite events at the fair. This year, Dakota Promotions Racing will take to the speedway Sept. 3. Races will feature Wissota Street Stock, Wissota Super Stock, Wissota Modified and Wissota Late Model. One can check the new State Fair Web site at www.sdstatefair.com for more information.

“One of the priorities for the new site is that fairgoers could sign up for fair updates on events happening at the fairgrounds,” said South Dakota State Fair manager Susan Hayward. “Sometimes people tell me they do not know when an event is taking place on the grounds. This will help - just sign up and we'll send it directly to you.”

Grandstand tickets went on sale July 2. Tickets can be purchased online, at the Grandstand ticket office or by calling (866) 605-FAIR. The Grandstand office is open from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30pm.
