Sweeter: ‘Three Wishes’ brings goodness back to TV

Wednesday, October 26, 2005 2:39 PM CDT

Wishes do come true. And thanks to reality TV, Amy Grant and NBC have brought us a show that makes wishes realities and makes people feel good.

The NBC show, “Three Wishes,” has brought something good back to our television sets. With serious, creepy and/or violent shows like “Ghost Whisperer,” “Crossing Jordan,” “Invasion” and “Bones,” television has become too serious about terrible things coming true.

“Three Wishes” presents viewers with a chance to witness some wonderful happenings for some deserving people.

What’s even more interesting is the fact that two of the first four shows were filmed in our area - Brookings, S.D., and Le Mars, Iowa.

In case you haven’t seen the show, tune in to your local NBC affiliate on Friday nights at 8 p.m. CDT. I can almost guarantee you’re going to break out in tears when you watch it - at least I did. And I know other people in the office cried too.

The episode in Brookings hit closest to home for Kurtis and I. Heck, I was crying practically before the show even got started.

It was great to see the mayor of Brookings invite a family affected by the recent hurricanes to come and live and work in Brookings. The town came together to offer a family of four a completely furnished home, food and clothing. Local job placers looked to find employment for the parents.

Also in Brookings, a teenage girl’s dream came true of traveling to Nashville to sing and record an album.

The third wish came true for Bill and Jackie Logue. Bill has an inoperable brain tumor and wanted his family to be provided for when he’s gone. SDSU stepped forward to offer Jackie and each of their five children full scholarships to SDSU should they decide to go there for college.

This story was the most touching to watch because we went to the same church as the Logues when we were in Brookings and got to know them.

In the Le Mars episode, a teenage girl got to relive her high school graduation since she was in a bad car accident and missed the original ceremony.

The second wish helped an Iowa State graduate go to New York to become a modern dancer and help her pay off her student loans.

The third wish rebuilt a dairy destroyed by fire. This wish was inspiring. A young couple with two small children had been working their hardest to recover from the devastating fire and were at the point of deciding to continue to dairy or quit.

The show made their dream come true and now one more young family can continue farming.

“Three Wishes” gives viewers the chance to see how communities come together to help each other and cheer each other on.

I can’t wait to see the rest of the season to see what the rest of America wishes for.

  • Thanks to everyone who sent us recipes. However, we need a lot more to get a great cookbook put together. Keep sending us those recipes.
